Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME)?
An Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) is a physician designated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to perform medical examinations and issue medical certificates for pilots and air traffic controllers.
What types of medical certificates are there?
There are three classes of medical certificates:
• First Class: Required for airline transport pilots.
• Second Class: Required for commercial pilots.
• Third Class: Required for private pilots.
How do I schedule an appointment with an AME?
You can schedule an appointment by calling our office at 352-306-6390 or online at our contact page
What should I bring to my appointment?
You should bring:
• A government-issued photo ID.
• Your FAA MedXPress confirmation number (if you completed the online application).
• Any relevant medical records or documentation.
• Your current medical certificate (if renewing).
How do I complete the FAA MedXPress application?
You can complete the FAA MedXPress application online at medxpress.faa.gov/MedXpress/Disclaimer.aspx.After completing the application, you will receive a confirmation number, which you need to bring to your appointment.
How long does the medical examination take?
The medical examination typically takes about 30-60 minutes, depending on the class of medical certificate and any medical issues that need to be addressed.
What happens if I have a medical condition?
If you have a medical condition, it does not necessarily mean you cannot get a medical certificate. The AME will evaluate your condition and determine if it meets the FAA’s medical standards. In some cases, you may need to provide additional documentation or undergo further testing.
How often do I need to renew my medical certificate?
• First Class: Every 12 months for pilots under 40, every 6 months for pilots 40 and older.
• Second Class: Every 12 months.
• Third Class: Every 60 months for pilots under 40, every 24 months for pilots 40 and older.
Can I fly immediately after my medical examination?
If you pass the examination and receive your medical certificate, you can fly immediately. If there are any issues or additional information required, the AME will inform you of the next steps.
What if my medical certificate is deferred?
If your medical certificate is deferred, it means that the AME needs to send your information to the FAA for further review. The FAA will then determine if you meet the medical standards and will notify you of their decision.
Can I get a second opinion if I disagree with the AME's decision?
Yes, if you disagree with the AME's decision, you can request a review by the FAA. You may need to provide additional medical documentation and undergo further evaluation.
